2003 Château Pavie Macquin

Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux · Red · From vineyards of around 80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon

Pavie Macquin sits on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, looking across to the medieval town. It's named after Albert Macquin, a grafting specialist who in the late 1800s helped save Saint-Émilion from phylloxera by introducing vines grafted onto American rootstocks. His descendants, the Corre-Macquin family, still own it, and it was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 2006.

2003 was a famously hot summer, which shows in its rich, ripe dark fruit, mocha and spice. Generous, with the limestone keeping it fresh.
